5 Warning Signs That Your Career Is Off Track

By Holly Zenith Sometimes the changes in our career direction are so subtle and gradual that we fail to notice them. But the earlier you see that youre headed in the wrong direction, the easier it is to get yourself back on course, or adjust course, if necessary. All too often, unwary workers realize theyre on the wrong track after years of time and energy have been expended. Foresight and extreme self-honesty can go a long way to prevent failure and disappointment. Here are some warning signs that your career may be off track: 1) You no longer feel a sense of passion and purpose about your career. What excited you ten years ago may not excite you now. Or it may be that you never have been excited about your career. You may have entered this career because it promised money or because it was expected of you. 2) What you do on a daily basis is motivated primarily by the avoidance of hassle. If you dont keep up a minimum level of productivity, the boss will be upset. If you dont work on certain reports, certain colleagues will miss their own deadlines. There is no intrinsic value to you in what you are doing. 3) You often find yourself fantasizing about doing something else. We all fantasize about better and more glamorous jobs, but if you frequently find yourself fantasizing about working in an entirely different field, it might merit exploration. 4) Your performance reviews are less than stellar. Perhaps youre no longer included in key projects. Your coworkers seem to get all the kudos and you only get criticism, or worse, youre ignored. Your boss doesnt seem to like you. Your clients seem less than satisfied. Even worse, the above are occurring and you find you dont really care. 5) When you envision yourself five or ten years into the future and imagine yourself in the same line of work, youre depressed. What to do? It may just be a phase. We all become periodically disenchanted with our work. But it usually passes. Often a new project or a vacation is enough to light the fire again. If you think its just a phase, take positive action to bring the phase to an end as quickly as possible. If its not a phase, then its time to do some serious reflecting about your future. Learn everything you can about career transitions, and embark upon a plan of action. And finally, be grateful that we live in a time and a culture when career changes are becoming accepted as the norm. Armed with a $70 million marketing war chest, the company rolled out its biggest product launch ever in 1998. So, what happened? Burger King’s new french fries turned out to be a whopper of a flop! “Sales of fries are significantly down,” stated a 1999 internal memo. “Double digit percent of consumers avoid Burger King because of our french fries.” Ouch! Fortunately, Coca-Cola and Burger King were able to survive near catastrophic miscalculations, because they had billions of dollars behind them. But other companies that badly miscalculate that don’t have those kind of financial resources, generally end up going out of business. That’s basically why so many dot-com companies are dropping like flies–and will continue to do so. Don’t try to reinvent the wheel. Instead, take the path of least resistance. Focus on what people are actually buying, and promote the daylights out of it, applying sound, proven advertising and marketing techniques. Japanese Hair Straightening

By Danna Schneider By now, I’m sure you’ve heard of the hair straightening process invented in Japan that has swept America and made countless women forever grateful to it’s hair-transforming powers. It goes by several different names - Japanese Straightening, Thermal Reconditioning, Straight Perm, and Japanese Straight Perm. So, what exactly can you expect after a thermal reconditioning service? Well, it’s actually nothing short of miraculous, if you choose the right product and stylist. I had my treatment done at a Japanese salon in Ohio that specializes in this service. After about six hours of sitting in the salon, being alternately shampooed, heated under intense heat lamps, blown out, flat ironed, and then going through the entire process again, I emerged from the salon with a completely retexturized, smooth and sleek head of hair. All together, the straightening process cost about $750, including a VERY generous tip and a large bottle of shampoo and conditioner specially formulated for my new tresses. The hourly rate for the service was $80, which is actually below most others that charge about $100 an hour. I was under strict instuctions to guard my hair from water or any type of moisture for the next 72 hours. I was completely thrilled with my new hair. The light reflected off of it like crazy, and it blew naturally in the breeze, not at all dried out or artificial, like you might expect after a chemical treatment. It actually was in the best condition ever, which seemed counterintuitive since it had esentially just been through six hours of chemical and heat treatment. Nevertheless, it was absolutely and undeniably true. I was told I would need to come back for a touch up on the new growth anywhere from 6 months to a year, depending on how straight I wanted it to stay and the rate of hair growth. It is now six months later, and even though it has more body, it is still shiny and smooth. I actually like it a little more with some body at the roots. It gives it a little extra lift, and the remaining hair is still straight and manageable. There are some things you want to look out for when searching for a salon that offers thermal reconditioning. First, find out which straightening product they use. The best Japanese Straightening System is Liscio, and the second is Yuko. Both are made in Japan. Any others are to be cautiously researched. Liscio has produced the best results on clients, and if you’ve read about it anywhere, there is nothing negative to be reported. This is the system the salon I went to used, and my results were healthy and beautiful. Second, make sure the technician performing the service has plenty of experience in the process. Any good salon will provide you with before and after pictures of their work. Third, be sure to be open and honest with the stylist about any prior haircoloring or processing, so they can adjust the treatment accordingly for the best results. Don’t fall in to the trap of buying expensive shampoos and conditioners like I did (I spent about $85 on shampoo and conditioner). After Japanese Straightening, you do want to be sure to keep hair protected from the sun and moisturized, so frequent deep conditioning and an SPF spray or other UV protective hair product is highly recommended. If you can, go to a stylist who was actually trained by a top technician at the corporate headquarters for the system they use. This assures they have been trained correctly and specifically on how to get the best results possible. What this means for you is a lower risk of getting a “botched” straightening job or damaged hair. Do your research. Get online and find the salons in your area that offer the service along with their credentials. After all, you don’t want to waste your hard-earned money on something that is less than a superior result. The cost of the treatment can be very high, especially if your hair is particularly long or hard to “de-curl”. Typically, the longer and curlier the hair, the longer the process takes, and the more you will spend. Marketing Made Simple

By Mike Myatt One of the most entertaining things you can do in business is to attend a meeting where a group of senior executives begin to pontificate on the subject of marketing. I have more fun watching people attempt to distinguish between marketing, advertising, branding, mediums, channels, markets, verticals, sectors, business development, sales, communications, public relations, etc. It never ceases to amaze me at how something so simple can become so convoluted, and how people can so passionately take a completely ridiculous stance and want to defend that position to the death. In this blog post I will attempt to demystify the subject of marketing and give you some actionable items can be implemented immediately to generate improved results. Lets take a moment and have some fun with definitions. The following two definitions of marketing come from the American Marketing Association. The first was a definition was used from 1985 until 2004 when the revised edition was released by the AMA. Previous AMA Definition: Marketing is the process of planning and executing conception, pricing, promotion and distribution of goods, ideas and services to create exchanges that satisfy individual and organizational goals. Current AMA Definition: Marketing is an organizational function and a set of processes for creating, communicating and delivering value to customers and for managing customer relationships in ways that benefit the organization and its stakeholders. OKa quick analysis of the two aforementioned definitions shows that the mistake of obviating the customer from the original definition was corrected by the clear and emphasized inclusion of the customer in the revised definition (I guess I wont resign my AMA membership just yet). Let me be clear that Im not meaning to make fun of academic theory or best practices, but I have little use for generic, omnibus or overarching statements as they tend not to accomplish anything of value, but rather they just create confusion among the ranks. Lets take a look at a few more definitionsMost of you know how fond I am of Druckerisms and so in good conscience I must quote him to you yet againPeter Druckers definition of marketing is: Marketing and innovation are the two chief functions of business. You get paid for creating a customer, which is marketing. And you get paid for creating a new dimension of performance, which is innovation. Everything else is a cost center. Now were getting a bit closer, but this is still too ambiguous for my taste From my perspective the problem with marketing as a discipline is that the desired result often gets lost in the vast expanse of its multi-disciplinary nature. The reality is that marketing is really the aggregation of any activity that touches the customer and that is just too much for most organizations to get their arms around, let alone to manage and execute on. So, at the end of the day I believe marketing is any activity that catalyzes a selling opportunity (my definition). Put simply I want marketing activities to make my phone ring! I dont care what the medium, market or message is, if it doesnt put a qualified prospect into a selling situation it is a waste of time, money and effort. Before the Myatt bashers come out of the shadows, Im not diminishing the value of brand equity, market share, mind share, etc., but Im simply trying to take a complex subject and make it real and actionable. If youre conducting brand campaigns or mind share initiatives thats fine, but realize that in most circumstances while these may classically be defined as marketing activities these efforts dont catalyze sales opportunities in the short run. The litmus test of any good gorilla marketing effort is measuring return on cost of sales. A great marketing campaign generates a high velocity of selling opportunities at the lowest possible cost over the shortest possible selling cycle. If you juxtapose this with the typical branding initiative youll see that these two efforts are truly diametrically opposed. So the goal of marketing is to not get caught up in theoretical debates and academic exercises, but to realize that the main thing, is to keep the main thing the main thing. If you cant put every marketing initiative under the magnifying glass and tie it to an acceptable return based on the generation of sales then you might want to reconsider what youre doing. Winter Gardening Looking Towards Spring

I am not suggesting that you actually garden during the winter but you should be using this time to plan your upcoming garden. As you look out at your yard and garden area during the cold months of winter, let your thoughts run wild and you will be amazed at what images you can conjure up. You might even want to try some of your new found ideas this spring! 1. Pour through garden catalogs, flip the pages and fold down the corner anytime you find something you like. Go back to it often until you decide what new plants and flowers you would like to try this spring. 2. Purchase some gardening books or magazines to get new ideas. Look at what other people are trying in their gardens and see if their ideas inspire you to try something new. 3. Look out your windows and try to visualize how you would like your yard and garden to look like. Study the sun….notice the shady spots. 4. Make a list of what is important to you, in other words, what do you want from your yard and garden? Do you want to create a patio area for entertaining, a vegetable garden so you grow all of your own vegetables, a quiet area for relaxing, or maybe an area that will attract wildlife. Anything is possible but it is important to recognize what you want before you actually start any gardening project. Ultimately, knowing what you want will save time and money! 5. Take lots of notes and draw any ideas you might come up with.(even those ideas that wake you up in the middle of the night!) 6. Of course, visit online nurseries to see what they have to offer. For the indoor gardener, this is especially true since most gardeners who bring their gardening indoors do so for a specific purpose. This purpose usually goes beyond a way to express one’s spirit. Kitchen herb gardens can also purify the air and be harvested for seasoning cooking delights, ornamental creations, and ingredients in cleansers. When setting out, the new herb garden enthusiast will likely choose the failsafe herbs, just like the pioneers did. There was a mix of herbs used by the pioneers - some were those brought carefully across the Atlantic from their country of origin, and others were those that had been long used by Native Americans. These were seasoning herbs and those that helped keep meat edible for the longest time. Both settlers and natives had medicinal herbs in their apothecary, and many happily shared their knowledge. Some of these cures have not stood up to scientific scrutiny, but still we tend to associate herbs with medicine. The best place to start a kitchen herb garden is along a south or west window. If winter sunlight is poor in your kitchen, invest in a “grow lamp” or fluorescent lighting for better lighting. As your indoor garden expands, you may want to invest in special shelving that fits into your indoor window frame.
