Career Advice: Winning the Career Game Calls for Putting on a Game Face

By Cathy Goodwin Q. Yesterday I was interviewed for a job that sounds really good. One question stumped me: What kind of boss do you like to work for? Caught by surprise, I said, I like a boss whos available to answer questions and give me feedback. How do I prepare for next time? A. Whether youre interviewing for a job, networking or making a client presentation, youve entered a business relationship. And business relationships differ from friendships. So when you enter a business or a sports arena, you put on a uniform and wear your game face. You follow the rules. Long-time successful players (like Diana Taurasi and Michael Jordan) know the rules so well they can trust their intuition. But most of us will view networking events and interviews as, well, a new ball game. We dont practice every day. Whole years even decades go by without a job interview. So when we come to the game, most of us need to be self-consciously aware of what we are doing. 1. Focus on the game, not your feelings. Before and after your business encounter, you can (and should) share feelings and concerns openly with a coach, consultant or counselor. But when youre face to face in a business meeting, your game face becomes part of your dress-for-success plan. A networking acquaintance asks, How are things going? You know he doesnt want to hear about problems with suppliers, child care or your crazy boss. Time to share a success story, matter-of-factly, without bragging. 2. Create your playbook before you enter the arena. Anticipate questions whenever possible. Talk to others with more recent experience. The other team has a three-point lead and you have sixty seconds left in the game. They have the ball. I must admit I was surprised the first time I heard a sportscaster explain, At this level, the coach has already diagrammed the plays for situations like this one. But it makes sense for sports and business, too. 3. Create a game plan for surprises. You cant plan for every contingency. Opposing coaches come up with creative plays and interviewers come back from a conference with new questions. One trick I share with clients: As you hear each question, ask yourself, What answer will show I understand the game and am prepared to play by the rules? So youre asked, What kind of boss do you like? Most likely, your prospective employer doesnt care what style of leadership you prefer. If youre working for a big company, chances are youll have multiple bosses in one year, each with different personalities, management styles and expectations. But your company does care about accomplishment. For a for-profit company, you might talk about working for a results-oriented boss. You then talk about the importance of contributing to the bottom line. Non-profits are guided by mission so you fine-tune your response. 4. Recognize that the game can change in the blink of an eye. Of course, you may realize that you will not be able to function in the environment presented by this organization. You can withdraw from the game altogether. But I encourage clients not to leave too fast. Just as a basketball game can reverse in the last twenty seconds, a job can change overnight. Literally. 5. Plan for getaways. Some people live for their game and their work. I know some Internet marketers who work sixteen hours a day happily. Some players and coaches live for the game, especially during March Madness. They relax by shooting around on the court. But most of us need breaks and getaways. We need to step back to gain perspective. And everyone I know needs a place to take off the game face and relax, if only for a little while. What Should I Not Tell My Date About Myself?

By Nocita Carter Yes, some things you shouldnt tell the person youre dating because its really not important! Some things are best left unsaid. You wouldnt want to turn off the person youre dating to the point they determine theyre really not interested in you after all! So, here are some tips that may assist you in not discussing certain topics with your date that you dont need to: 1) Never discuss with your date your past boyfriend, girlfriend or former spouse! This is a definite no, no. No one wants to hear about how great or bad your past girlfriend, boyfriend, or former spouse was! Dont dwell on the past. Your new date might think youre trying to make them like your past date or spouse, and this may be a turn off for them! 2) Dont talk about how much money you have or lack of it. This may come across to your date as your way of telling them that money is the most important thing to you in a relationship. This could be a relationship ender for you. 3) Gossip about your past dates, friends, family or whomever is not a good idea. Its really not important for you to discuss this with your date. Some people see others that gossip as busy bodies who have to be involved in everyone elses business but their own! This may be a turnoff for your date who could be a person that values their privacy and is a non gossiper. 4) Dont discuss your past intimate relationships! This is a definite no for discussion. This may make your date very uncomfortable and put them in an awkward position as to what you may or may not expect from them. So dont discuss your past intimacies! Steer far away from this topic. Dont even talk about it! This would be your best bet in your new relationship if you dont want to create waves. 5) If you cheated on your previous date, dont even think about talking about this in your new relationship! No one wants to hear about you cheating in a past relationship. If you decide to talk about this subject, be prepared for your date to possibly tell you to take a hike! They may decide that they dont want to risk the chance of you cheating on them, since you have a history of doing this! You do have a preexisting history of cheating, remember you told them so. Get the picture, dont talk about it! 6) Anything else that you believe would not be something important that youd want to tell your date about you. Dont tell it, if its not important! Well, youve probably got a good idea on what you should not tell your date. After all, do you want to keep dating the person youre with, or do you want to keep looking for someone new? Youre possibly saying to yourself, I really would like to continue dating the person Im with. Then, if this is the case, dont scare them away from you! Remember, some things are best left unsaid if the information is not important to the relationship. Tropical Palm Trees

By Kevin Stith Weather and climate conditions all over the world vary because of various features. This includes average and daily temperatures, rain, snow, precipitation, wind speed, humidity and cloud cover. Based upon longitude and latitude locations, different regions experience diverse weather types. When referring to a tropical zone, it refers to the area lying between the Tropic of Cancer (2327′N) and the Tropic of Capricorn (2327′S) with the Equator passing through these two latitudes. These areas experience hot and humid climates and adequate rainfall, which varies depending upon location. When classifying terms that refer to tropical, it may refer to vegetation, organisms or weather. As the term suggests, tropical palm trees refer to the wide variety of palm species that are indigenous to this region. Tropical zones are distinguished as areas that experience high temperatures, humidity and rainfall. These conditions are favorable for a large number of palm species. Palm trees refer to a wide range of plants categorized under the Palmae family. They have a unique unbranched trunk and leaves that can be classified as pinnate or palmate leaves, depending upon palm type and place of origin. The palm family constitutes about 1100 varieties and can be found in other climate zones as well. Palm trees are found in abundance in most countries that are located in this zone. Since tropical zones are categorized by warm conditions, plant growth is sustained all through the year. Most tropical palm species are Since they are so widely spread it is difficult to categorize each plant according to its origin. This is because over time, palm tree varieties have traveled long distances and are now found in areas that are far away from their original backdrop. There are three major tropical palm landscapes. This includes locales in Africa, Asia and America. Depending upon unique weather conditions that vary in different continents, countries and states, tropical palm trees that dominate the landscape vary. In certain areas, tropical palm trees even grow under other weather conditions in a sporadic manner. Swell Your Bank Account Balance in 2005!

By Rebekah Slatkin We have heard time and time again that money doesn’t grow on trees. How we wish it does. Life is super expensive! You may have even taken a second or third route to pursuing income. I am no financial planner but the following tips will assist you in getting your finances in order and making the money you have last longer. 1. As soon as the mail arrives, separate the bills and put them into one designated area. Sort through them and put the bills into 2 folders labeled 1-15 for the first 15 days of the month, and the other folder labeled 16-31. Twice a month, designate a day to pay your bills. Be sure to schedule your bill paying day on your calendar so it gets done in plenty of time. By the way, I also keep a folder for medical reimbursement receipts for my insurance and for tax documentation. 2. Designate a separate auto depreciation account that money is transferred into monthly. It doesn’t have to be a large amount. Have it transferred automatically, and sure enough, by the time you need to buy a car, you will have money to turn to. 3. What motivates a purchase? Do you shop when you’re blue, stressed, frustrated, bored? If you know you use shopping as a coping skill, then don’t set yourself up! Don’t go to the Mega Bucks Boutique. Go someplace where the prices are reasonable and you won’t replace your current emotion with guilt. Go to the dollar store. Yes, the all-incredible, super, glamorous collar store. You need to buy something, right? I buy generic children’s Tylenol ($3-5), Band-Aids($2-4), shampoo($2-5), gift bags($2-3), all the trimmings for a child’s birthday party($20-30), hair stuff for my daughter ($2-4), bath soap($2-4), cleaning supplies ($2-4) and on and on. Think about paying the cost of these items in other stores (listed in parentheses) and then think–I only paid a dollar. It is is amazing all the stuff people pay too much for and find on the shelves of these kinds of stores. Along with the good feelings someone gets when purchasing something expensive, there is a sort of a euphoria that can be felt when you save a significant amount of money. Better yet, later you don’t feel guilty for saving your family $20. (Teresa Higginbotham) 4. Consolidate your credit cards. You may have heard this before and it is REALLY IMPORTANT. By paying the minimum monthly balance on many cards, you are paying lots of finance charges and postage. Choose 1 credit card with the lowest APR and highest credit limit. Transfer old balances to this card. Your balance will look a lot higher because all spending is on 1-2 cards. You will be able to pay a much larger balance though now that you only have 1-2 cards instead of 10! 5. Keep track of expenses. I don’t mean a rigid budget, but for a month or so, keep a small notebook with you and record your purchases. Include the miscellaneous ones- the People magazine, snapple, and starbucks. Record these expenses and at the end of the month, total them and match them up against your income. You will see where the money is going. Perhaps much of it is falling into categories such as the miscellaneous one. You can cut back on these incidentals by assessing whether or not you really need these items. I don’t mean not to enjoy life and relax but keeping tabs on where the money is going is really helpful when making decisions about how you want to spend most of your money-travel, retirement, or eating out? Make small incremental changes when possible. I hope these money saving and enhancing tips benefit you in your pursuit of a balanced life. LG Shine Mobile Phone Contract Review

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Mark_Hirst]Mark Hirst The LG shine is a follow on from the hugely successful LG chocolate phone. Now slimmer and ultimately more attractive than its chocolate counterpart, the LG slide is a slider-phone with an extremely attractive shiny exterior. The LG shine comes with a conventional keypad that is only revealed when you slide it down from behind the screen. LG seemed to have learnt from their mistake with the Chocolate, so many people werent happy with a touch sensitive keypad as it was too difficult to use. The screen turns into a mirror when it is not in use. Although this is not a new concept, it is a pretty stylish one nonetheless. When the phone is in use, it lights up to reveal a top-end TFT screen with 262,000 colours. One downside would be that the screen can be difficult to see in direct sunlight, so if you spend a lot of time outdoors this phone may not be for you. The LG shine comes with a good amount of features. The camera is 2 megapixels and uses a Schneider-Kreuznach lens, there is auto focus and an LED for use when there is dim light. The camera can also be used as a video camera. The end result is a perfectly adequate camera for taking photographs whilst out with friends. The LG shine also comes with an MP3 player that supports a multitude of file formats. This ultimately means that you can transfer music from a wide range of MP3 players with little or no conversion required. The Shine takes Micro SD memory cards that can store up to 2GB. If you are looking to use this phone as a music player as well, then a high end memory card would be well worth an investment. Overall the LG shine looks good and has a good range of features. If you are looking to make a fashion statement with you mobile phone then you wont go too far wrong with this little number. A well thought out phone. Is Your Legal Team On A Collision Course With GAAP?

By Richard Hall It seems as though the accounting rules that just a few short years ago seemed to be carved in stone and generally accepted by almost all businesses, are now more like accounting questions that are subject to ongoing challenge, discussion and debate. It also appears that rules governing the once sacrosanct relationships between corporate counsel and senior-level corporate executives are also now open to ongoing discussion. These new rules, established under the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 and enforced by the Securities and Exchange Commission, require both in-house and outside lawyers who see evidence of any “material” wrong-doing in businesses to report it up the corporate ladder. This rule is causing quite a stir in the executive ranks, where all business-related discussions between corporate executives and corporate counsel were previously considered protected under the attorney-client privilege. Senior-level executives, who were once comfortable discussing sensitive legal matters and tough business decisions with corporate counsel, arent quite as conversational anymore. These now tight-lipped corporate executives feel that frank and open discussions with their corporate counsel may not be in their best interest, and at some point could be used against them in a court of law. The fear of being dragged into court, or worse, being dragged in front of their Board of Directors, has many of them taking a vow of silence. The Securities and Exchange Commission meanwhile, contends that theres no need for concern over issues of attorney-client privilege between senior executives and corporate counsel, because the privilege never existed. The SECs position is that corporate counsel works for the corporation and shareholders, not the senior-level managers. Former SEC chairman Harvey L. Pitt left no doubt as to where corporate lawyers should pledge their allegiance. “Lawyers for public companies represent the company as a whole and its shareholder-owners, not the managers who hire and fire them. This tidbit of information comes as breaking news to many senior executives who for years have openly discussed sensitive legal matters acting under the belief that they were protected by the attorney-client privilege. Im sure that most corporate attorneys wouldnt argue against the idea of protecting shareholder interest. Its just that by placing attorneys in the role of corporate whistleblower, the SEC has created an adverse relationship between corporate counsel and the senior-level executives theyre hired to represent and advise. In addition to making waves in the corporate boardrooms, these new rules of attorney-client conduct also seem to directly challenge states rights governing attorney-client conduct. Some argue that Sarbanes-Oxley and the SEC have overstepped their bounds in an overzealous attempt to regulate business conduct, and in the process have taken regulation of corporations and their corporate counsel away from the states and turned it over to the federal government. That question is still open to debate, and will be for quite some time. But what is known, however, is that in the new Sarbanes-Oxley world, accounting rules and regulations are subject to change and should be considered an ongoing work in progress. You can expect new and revised rules to keep showing up every month or so at the federal, state and local levels, and while the SEC appears willing to consider some minor changes to existing regulations, possibly scaling back rules affecting smaller companies, dont expect any sweeping changes. And with the new rules being added and existing rules being revised, expect both legal spend and accounting costs to continue to soar for many years to come. Richard A. What Everyone Ought to Know About The Enemy Called Fat

By Bryan Miller So you’re fat. Big deal. Everyone at some point is caught in the crossfire of the battle of the bulge. It’s a seemingly unending struggle for some, but a quick bout for others. But none-the-less, it is a battle, and a tough one, at that. Sadly, our enemy, the gut that hangs in front of us, is a fierce one, and an enemy demanding respect. Football teams, countries at war, debaters, diplomats, and presidential candidates all know the secret to winning a competition, or bout of any sort. They send out spies, watch tapes of the competing teams, and they research for the knowledge on how to conquer their opponents. They back up their fight with knowledge of the weak points in their enemy, and then… they exploit them mercilessly. This is the approach one must take when fighting the oppression of obesity. It is a battle, for most, and will always be a battle as long as there is too much food, and a lot less work. What I am about to give you are some insider, confidential, key components on fat that you may not know. They will help you win this uphill battle against your ever-growing, always widening waist-line. These are confidential, hard to find tips that will help you know your body’s method of storing fat, and how you can exploit them, use their tactics against them, and ultimately overcome. Stand tall, for you will be the victor. Warning! Do not read if you are looking to lose fat fast and expect to keep it off. These peeks into the human body are meant only for those with the guts (or bellies) to work hard for healthy, effective fat loss, not those wishing to get-thin-quick, and potentially gain more weight back. Although you are the deciding factor of how fast you lose weight, this is merely placing knowledge in your arsenal, not telling you what to do. If you are willing, then continue reading. The next exposing secrets will help you understand your enemy “Fat”, and will further your efforts in weight loss: Peek 1: Why Your Body is Already Perfect.. The body is built for performance. It is a perfect engine that needs admiration for it’s designer, whether you believe it’s God or evolution, studying the body is almost like studying outer space - it is absolutely too complex to take in all at once. It’s a perfect machine that will work exactly how it should, when it should, and without defect. Even when someone thinks something is wrong, the body is working right. This is the difference between the mind and the body. The body never wants, it always needs. The mind wants, but rarely realizes the needs. The body needs fat, but the mind wants the body to look firm, without fat. So to begin creating the body that your mind wants, you must first respect the perfect engine that is the body. Peek 2: Is Fat a Friend or a Foe? Not all fat is bad for you. In some cases, fat is very good for you. There are some vitamins that can only be absorbed when fat is present. Hormones depend on fat a large percent of the time. Women who are nursing, those with broken bones, and new born babies all need fat in some fashion. It’s the amount of fat, and the type of fat that makes it a harm, or a help. Fat around the middle? Bad. Enough said. I do in depth studies, and like to make people scared about having a fat belly at my blog. Mid-section fat is a very scary thing because it is around your vital organs, especially your liver and heart. If these are fatty, you’re more prone to have heart disease, or liver failure. And I think you can agree with me that that is a bad thing. But there is some fat in the body that is needed. Cholesterol in the body can be converted to energy through the liver. And all fat is a source of energy for daily activities. Without fat, you’d be tired, but with too much - well, I won’t go so far as to say you could die young, that would be too scary. Peek 3: How Did This Fiend - Fat - Get There? Fat is introduced into the body at the very youngest of ages. It’s given to us by our mom’s while we are yet alien-shaped fetuses in her body. This is a natural part of life. The only problem is when we get older, we eat way more than our body needs. So when the body (again, that perfect machine that it is) sees all this extra, it goes into performance mode, and stores this extra bit of energy for later as fat. With this in no one’s consideration, however, we continually place our body in that constant mode of “must store”. And our fat cells continue to grow. Then, when they have no more space in which to grow inside these tiny balloons, they multiply. Peek 4: The Invincible Enemy. Once you have a fat cell in your body, you cannot lose them. You can lose the stored triglycerides inside the cell, but never lose the cell itself. Once you’ve got adipose tissue, you’ve always got adipose tissue. There’s not removing it unless you opt for dangerous, health hazardous procedures such as liposuction or a tummy tuck. The fat cells in your body can only shrink. They are your friends for life. And not without giving you a share of trouble, either. Because these new additions to your body now have memory. They realize what they use to have was gone, and they lust after it. Peek 5: Winning the Battle Doesn’t Win You the War. The body has a set method of maintaining itself. It’s complexity and set ways make it almost impossible to lose weight fast and keep it off. Since the body is built for performance, it sets itself at its most desired point, and it expects to stay there. This is why underweight people find it so difficult to gain weight and keep it on. And why overweight people who lose weight quickly, tend to gain it all back. The body’s fat cells, and the body’s desired way of living is actually set. And breaking that pattern too quickly causes the body to “reset” itself to get to that point again. This is why gaining and losing weight is so popular nowadays. Because people want fast results without taking into consideration the perfect engine that is the body. The mind wants it now, because it expects it now. The body realizes that there are needs, and steps, and rules to losing that weight effectively. So now you know the enemy. Now you see what you are up against. You know that your body works perfectly, that fat is only a “side effect” of eating extra calories, and that you can never lose these fat cells. But what now? How do I exploit these new found attributes to the enemy? With forceful war tactics, of course. Tactic 1: Using Your Body Against Itself - What Your Mind Doesn’t Want You To Know. The body burns fat for energy. So you must exert energy to burn fat. Your body stores fat for energy, so eat like you don’t want any extra fat. This is how you can use your mind (now filled with knowledge) to burn more fat by using the body’s natural method of living against itself. This is not cannibalism, this is smart living. Tactic 2: Treat Fat As A Friend. Do not be afraid of fat. Fat is good at times. Eat plenty of “good fats” because they are great for the heart. Omegas 3 - 6 - 9 are all fantastic for your health, as well as help mobilize even more fat, and are readily available for energy burning. Stay away from hydrogenated oils. These are actually more damaging than real fat. Without getting into the chemical breakdown of these oils, I will just say that they act more like free radicals in your body than actual food. Tactic 3: Learn To Accept Fat. Some people are more naturally bent toward being heavy. Others are bent toward being slimmer. The mind is a powerful thing and can reek havoc on those who are not content with the natural selection of their body. Learn to be confident in your skin, even if you are not as thin as you think you should be. Strive for healthy. You will live longer if you are healthy. Change the desires in your mind to do the best you can, but never challenge your body to be something it can’t ever be. But never settle for lazy, always strive; but be considerate of your body. Tactic 4: Liposuction is Not The Answer. Even though I am not in a position to tell you what to do, I can advise you not to get liposuction. That doesn’t defeat the problem, it just prolongs the issue. Your mind will remember every craving, every habit previous to the liposuction, and you’ll never learn to control yourself and work toward your goals. Learn how to shift your desires through goals and hard work so that you can meet those expectations in every day life, and never just settle for the easy task. Tactic 5: Work Smarter, Not Harder. If you lose weight too fast, you will ultimately gain it back. Don’t go on fad diets that promise quick results. Change your entire body by changing your entire lifestyle and eating. Your body will then come following. If you lose weight too quickly, you’re apt to gain back every ounce, even more! Change the way your body works by changing your habits, your routines, and your eating habits. Slowly your body will begin doing the work for you, and your mind and body will work together in harmony to create the body you’ve always dreamed of. Nothing came from those who didn’t work. If a farmer plants a seed, it doesn’t grow unless he waters it. And he waters it smarter than he does harder. Take the appropriate steps, and you will be rewarded. Take the easy path, and you’ll drown you seed, and never produce a crop. Want more information? Learn how to flatten your belly at my official blog: http://www.bellyfatology.com. When you hear the word bush, the first thing that will come to your mind is the ancient story of a burning bush. Surely, this type of plant marked in your memory from your childhood to the present. Shrub or a bush is just the same. This is a horticultural woody plant. However, this is distinct from a tree because of its multiple stems and lower height and measures less than 6 meters. It does not also have a sturdy trunk like a tree. Planting shrub is easy. There is also a perfect time for planting one. If you want to include shrub plant as one of your collections in the garden you can do so. Surely, the shrub will add beauty to your garden or landscape. For better results on shrub growth, you can follow the following steps in plating shrub: It is good to plant shrub during winter season and early morning of spring. This is the time when the soil is not frozen. The new roots should shred freely underground so it is better to have good climate. If the soil is frozen or the sun is too hot it will not grow well. Make sure that the roots are cleaned. Remove the dead roots because it can affect the growth of the plant. You can soak the roots of the bush for about 1 to four hours before planting. This will help in keeping moisture to the plant. Dig a hole that is deep enough for the roots. Use a shovel to loosen the soil so that it will not solidify. Plant the shrub to the hole. Fill it halfway with the soil and tamp it with your foot. After you finished in filling the soil, keep it moist and apply mulch into it. This will make the shrub healthy. Monitor it as frequent as possible and if you observe yellow leaves falling water the shrub. The key here is to choose the right shrub that can thrive to the kind of soil that you have in your garden. The roots of the shrub should not be confined to the good soil alone because it can result to a weak plant. Constant watering is also the secret to a good growth of the shrub plant.
